There are good days, there are great days, and then there are the days whereby you get to speak to people who are actually making your most anticipated video game ever, today is that day.
In a real exclusive for the site I'm hereby posting up two interviews with guys from Remedy Entertainment and grilling them on the upcoming behemoth that is Alan Wake. I also get a world exclusive nugget of information never before released to the public about the game, check Mika's interview for that one...
Click here for my interview with Mika Reini, Chief Financial Officer at Remedy, and here for my interview with Community Manager, Peter Papadopoulos.
I'd like to say a special thanks to all the guys at Remedy Entertainment (not forgetting you Markus!) for being so welcoming and supporting an independent website such as this, you guys rock.
In a recent interview with managing director of Remedy Entertainment, Matias Myllyrinne, 'Inside Xbox' seem to have gleamed some information for what the enemies in Alan Wake will be derived from, and after having watched the video review on Inside Xbox I heard the quote: "locals overtaken by the dark force".
I hadn't heard this before, up until now the enemies have been shrouded in mystery, but it seems that when you partake in the investigative day time sections of the game, those characters you interact with will indeed be coming back to haunt you come night time...
I've been following this game religiously and have never actually heard concrete evidence that locals found within Bright Falls will actually be tainted and pose a threat to Alan, sure its a given in the horror movie/game sense but at least we have heard confirmation from Remedy that they won't just be faceless ghouls, the enemies should and could tie into the story, at least those that matter, of course there will be faceless enemies to fill in the gaps, but this is good to hear.
Gamersyde.com got to play the most recent build of Alan Wake in Paris (jammy bastards!) and give us a lot more insights into what this game is going to deliver.
From their hands on experience with the game, of notable highlights are the fact that they were impressed with "the total absence of aliasing", to the layman that means no jagged edges on objects, this is one thing that developers find incredibly hard to combat, as smoothing them out, to give a much better look to the game, takes incredible processing power, most developers simply don't even bother as it slows everything else down.
What Remedy need commending for here is that not only have they managed to pull off 720p 4x Full Screen Anti-Aliasing, they have done it with their own in house engine, they didn't license it from the 'Unreal Engine' like 95% of other developers have done this generation, this truly is their baby.
Anyway click here to read their impressions with the first 90 minutes with the game, there is also an awesome and lengthy video interview with Oskari Häkkinen at the bottom of the article that demands checking out.
*Update* - If you are connected to Xbox live check 'Inside Xbox' from the dashboard for two new Alan Wake video's whereby emo boy 'MrPointyHead' (Dan Maher) gets to visit the Remedy offices and ask the guys some questions, some good stuff within.
It seems a Kotaku reader has discovered a glitch within Heavy Rain that renders the gorgeous Madison Paige completely naked, hmmm, glitch? Its a perfect render of her body complete with pubic hair, surely its an easter egg hidden by the developers and granted to those lucky enough to be able to find it more like...
Details are sketchy on how this guy got the "glitch" to present itself, but it is found during the scene where, playing as Ethan, you have the option to kiss Madison, the thing is here EVERYONE hits the kiss button, but if you don't, and the game has Ethan kiss her anyway you're onto something, if you quit and reload from that point when you come back Madison is in her birthday suit, apparently.
Maybe its her way of getting that kiss second time around? Anyway here is video of the "glitch" in question.
*Warning Not Safe For Work*
Adobe Flash Player not installed or older than 8.0.22!
*Update* This DLC is to be released March 4th, I'd been trying to access it on the network without success thinking it was due to the recent downtime, and I'd read previously the DLC would be available from the release date of the game, not so, it isn't available yet!
Anyway this DLC is supposed to be much more horror orientated than the main game with some incredibly tense scenes, it features Madison investigating the 'Origami Killer' prior to the main story and has her exploring a creepy taxidermist's office, review up (as well as the full game) soon.
After having completed the fantastic Heavy Rain I feel compelled to warn potential buyers that although the game is utterly fantastic, and I do mean that, as a story driven video game it doesn't get any better, that it does contain some worrying technical issues.
When you first boot the game, if you are online connected you will be prompted to install a 226mb patch, could this be the cause of the issues?
From the many comments I've read from people also experiencing these issues most state that uninstalling the patch alleviates the problem, a bit strange you might think that Quantic Dream would release a patch that breaks the game? Maybe they were trying to fix another issue that had side effects, and maybe depending on your PS3 version these problems may or may not come to light?
Whatever the case, I played through it on a 40gb 'fat' PS3 bought when they were first released and I encountered one case of the game freezing completely, requiring a power off of the PS3, as well as audio drop outs and slow down in some of the more tense scenes, some of the loading times were also excruciatingly long to the point where I thought the game had crashed, in one instance the animated face that pops up when levels are loaded froze, just as I was about to turn off the PS3 again, the game kicked back in, worrying.
One of the top 3 stories on N4G.com right now is a trailer for the recently released 'Deadly Premonition', previously entitled 'Rainy Woods', it has been released on the sly out of nowhere and after having watched a cutscene that everyone is talking about on N4G I can see why.
This is hilarious, one of the most bizarre scenes from a video game you are ever likely to witness, but it is so bad its good, fucking fantastic in fact. It looks very Twin Peaks and about 700 times more bizarre than that, this is just quality ridiculous stuff.
Click here to watch one of the most laugh out loud bad things ever, I can't wait to get this game, its a survival horror with free roaming around a town but looks utter shit, superb, review up as soon as I've managed to get a copy.
In an interview with gamesindustry.biz Remedy managing director Matias Myllyrine says that they threw away 6 months of game content due to "one big mistake". Quote:
"We did make one big mistake, and we came back from that - it was trying to make a sandbox structure to a thriller, and that just really wasn't working. It felt deluded, and the pacing wasn't right - for a thriller the pacing is important, you need a bit of foreshadowing.
We probably threw away six months of work, which doesn't sound that bad, but it's a lot of work with substantial teams... we saw we could deliver an okay game, but it wasn't going to be a heart-pounding ride, it wasn't going to be a thriller in the true sense of the word."
So yes we were meant to get that sandbox environment, but to be fair to the developer, if there's nothing to do in all that space (remember Just Cause?) or the game loses clarity then decisions like this have to be made, and from the latest videos it looks all the better for it.
Remember we are promised a quite large roaming environment in day time sections that should quench that thirst for anyone still after it.
