Here are some answers to a few questions you may have about the website that will hopefully answer them for you before you have to send me an email! This list will expand over time so check back now and again for updates. Q. So what's this website about? A. Scary video games, the clue is in the title 'Game Scares', if it's a scary, horror themed video game it will get coverage on this website, we will review it, show you pictures and video of it, discuss, dissect and analyze it, oh and then go play it. Q. How come this website isn't updated every day like the other gaming sites out there? A. Simple, because it's ran solely by one person, me (Shane), and with a full time job that has nothing to do with the internet or video games I don't always have time to update it as much as I would like, however I like to think updates are quite regular for a site in this genre, there will only ever be a couple of days whereby nothing new is added. Q. Which console is the best? A. I laugh at fanboys, I determine them as those who simply can't afford ALL the consoles, if you are a true gamer you would own them all as they each contain exclusives that you'll never get to see otherwise. Mind you the Xbox 360 wins hands down for me, but I can only say that because I own them all! Q. When I'm watching a video on the site how come sometimes it stops playing and a little animated circle pops up on the screen? A. That's called buffering, the video playback all depends on your connection speed, how busy your Isp is or how busy my site is, these factors all contribute to slowdown so at busy times of the day the video may indeed suffer, again I am only one little website and don't have the power of, for example, Youtube's massive bandwidth allowance. I am based in the UK but the site is hosted in America, so again, depending on where you live and the time of day, when the site runs better will vary. Q. Where do you get your games from for review? A. I buy them! I don't get sent games by distributor's, every game reviewed has been bought by me, and I currently own an Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii so I'm pretty much covered (and skint) when it comes to video games. Q. Do you record the video for your articles? A. Some of it yes, I let you know within the article when it is me playing it, other video on the site is contributed either by Youtube or site visitor's, and they are all hosted on this website, I don't link to dodgy Youtube video's which is why they are all full frame and free of intrusive logo's. In the future I intend to do video reviews recorded and commentated on by myself, look out for that, you are guaranteed a good laugh, if not from the dodgy journalism then definitely from my dodgy brummy (for our American visitor's that means I sound like Ozzy Osbourne) accent. Q. What are the benefits of being a registered user? A. It mainly streamlines the site for you, you don't have to keep typing in your name to post comments, if you play in the arcade your high scores will be saved automatically, you can create a profile for the forum and build your rank, you can use the chat room, and of course you get access to the exclusive 'Members Only' area that normal visitor's are strictly unable to access. In time many more features will become available to registered members, but always remember you DON'T have to be registered to post comments on the site, that is available to ANY visitor, we want to hear from as many of you as possible so that is definitely NOT locked down. Q. How come I can't download your video's? A. Because it drains costly bandwidth, it would slow the site down so I've disabled it, if you are desperate for the video see if it's on Youtube, there are easy ways to download video from there. Incidentally there is a button on the video player in all articles that lets you watch the video in full screen, many people miss that! Q. How come I can't download the soundtracks? A. Because in most cases the soundtracks are currently for sale on CD and we are strictly against piracy, we host them to be heard through the browser so that if you like them you can go buy them, or simply load up the webpage they are on on this site and listen to your hearts content! Q. Why have you put the 'GameScares.Com' logo in the top right corner of all the videos on the site? I want no intrusions god damn it. A. Ideally I'd love to have the video play with no intrusion as well, however the internet is full of thieves when it comes to bandwidth so if another site wants to link to my videos and display them on his site as if they were his own (which can be done easily) then he will now have to display my url, it's all about getting your name out there baby. Q. How come the website is on the left of my screen and doesn't fill it? A. Because I have to cater for as many resolutions as possible, the site is best viewed at a minimum of 1024x768 pixels (which will completely fill the screen) and resolutions higher than that will see the site left based. You might not realise it but people are out there with lower resolutions than that and I need the site to be viewed by as many people as possible without having them scroll too far to view it. Q. Can I send you a review/video clip/feature etc. for the site? A. Please do, I don't want to have to do this thing all by myself, user interaction is what it's all about, I'd love to receive any content you think is worth hosting on the site, you won't be paid (!) but full credit will go your way so if it could help your portfolio, go for it, I'll gladly host it, (if it's good enough!) just email me and we'll sort it out. Q. Can I advertise on your website? A. Yes, contact me for details. Q. Can I be a forum moderator? A. Yes you can! As long as you are genuinely interested in scary video games, are willing to post up news and articles and can help with spam. If you feel you have what it takes send me a message and we'll sort it out. Q. Someone said a nasty thing to me on the forum what are you going to do about it? A. The forum is constantly moderated by myself and Site Manager Craig, if there is anything untoward on there it will be dealt with immediately, persistent offender's will be banned, trust me, you will have no grief on the forum, spammers and douchebags we have a delight in twatting with the ban hammer. Q. I just viewed something obscene on the forum that I wish I had never seen, why was it there? A. Again, the forum is moderated by two people, we were simply not online at the time to get rid of it. The forum WILL contain spam and dodgy content, but until either me or Craig see it that post will remain. Be assured that any spam post will always be deleted within 24 hours and we apologise for any post that may upset you, measures have been taken to ensure this is kept to a minimum but spam threat will always remain on any forum, sorry. Q. How come *insert game name here* isn't on your website? A. In time it probably will be if its in the horror genre, we are constantly building, stay tuned, and let us know what you would like to see. Q. I do/don't agree with an article on your website, how can I let you know my feelings? A. Beneath each article on the website you will see "Add Your Comment", type your name and comment in the spaces provided and you can say whatever you like about it. Please note however the comments are for constructive criticism or praise, they are NOT to be used for abusive comments or advertising, anyone found doing this will have their access to the website denied. When you post a comment you leave an imprint that can be traced, please think before you post! Q. Are you pressured by game companies to give positive reviews for games you normally wouldn't? A. Absolutely not, again this is a personal website and we receive no financial gain from any distributor, if a game is bad I'll let you know, trust me. Q. I'm stuck on a game in the Arcade, how do I get past it? A. The arcade games are merely hosted on the site, we have no affiliation with the creator's, however in most cases Googling like so; "game name flash walkthrough" can turn up the desired results. Q. What future plans do you have for the site? A. Where do I start? Video reviews are the next big thing, then I'm looking at adding full walkthroughs and cheats, more interviews with developers, video from us going to game conventions (drunk most of the time) and a lot more, this website is still in it's infancy, I have many, many plans for it. |
